Novo Nordisk Malaysia has launched “Sayang, Kan?”, a nationwide public awareness campaign aimed at encouraging more compassionate and science-based conversations about obesity.
The campaign comes as more than half of Malaysian adults are living with overweight or obesity, highlighting the growing importance of public awareness and early intervention.
Shifting the Conversation Around Obesity

Built around the familiar Malaysian phrase “Sayang, Kan?”, the campaign encourages people to reflect on how they talk about health, weight, and wellbeing.
According to Novo Nordisk Malaysia, obesity is often misunderstood as simply a matter of willpower or lifestyle choices. However, medical experts stress that obesity is a chronic disease influenced by biological, metabolic, and environmental factors.
The initiative aims to help Malaysians better understand obesity while encouraging those affected to seek professional medical support without fear of stigma or judgement.
Understanding Challenges Beyond Weight

One topic highlighted during the campaign launch was food noise, which refers to persistent thoughts about food driven by biological signals in the brain.
For many people living with obesity, these signals can make weight management significantly more challenging despite efforts to maintain healthier habits.
Chef and television personality Ili Sulaiman shared her own experience during the event, describing how learning about food noise helped her better understand her personal health journey.
Focusing on Health and Long-Term Wellbeing
Healthcare professionals at the launch emphasised that obesity management should focus on improving overall health rather than simply achieving a lower number on the weighing scale.
They noted that excess fat around internal organs is closely linked to conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other non-communicable diseases.
The campaign also highlights the importance of early intervention, informed healthcare decisions, and supportive conversations that empower individuals to seek help when needed.
Encouraging Earlier Action
As Malaysia continues to address rising obesity rates, the Sayang, Kan? campaign seeks to create greater public understanding and reduce stigma surrounding obesity treatment.
By promoting awareness, education, and compassionate dialogue, the initiative hopes to encourage more Malaysians to take proactive steps towards better health and wellbeing.
