MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court overturned the Sandiganbayan conviction of former First Lady Imelda Marcos on seven counts of graft involving her alleged financial interests in private foundations in Switzerland, accordding to sources privy to the case.
The ruling of the Supreme Court’s First Division, penned by Justice Rodil V. Zalameda, was issued on June 10, 2026 but was released to the public only on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2026, the same sources said.
The decision effectively sets aside the anti-graft court’s landmark Nov. 9, 2018 ruling that found Marcos guilty of seven violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act.
The Sandiganbayan had sentenced Marcos to prison terms ranging from six years and one month to 11 years for each count and ordered her perpetual disqualification from public office. It also acquitted her on three other graft charges.
The cases stemmed from allegations that Marcos, while serving as governor of Metro Manila and holding other government positions during the administration of her husband, the late president Ferdinand E. Marcos, maintained financial interests in several private foundations based in Switzerland.
