As the festive season approaches, Malaysians are once again embracing the tradition of giving duit raya, now increasingly done through digital platforms especially using Touch ’n Go “Money Packet” . However, alongside this convenience comes a growing risk of scams involving fake Touch ’n Go “Money Packet” QR codes.

Recent findings reveal that scammers are circulating fraudulent QR codes on social media and messaging platforms, claiming to offer free duit raya. These codes are designed to mislead users into believing they will receive money upon scanning. In reality, they redirect victims to suspicious websites that request personal and sensitive information.

Unlike legitimate Money Packet transactions, which automatically credit funds into a user’s Touch ’n Go eWallet, these fake QR codes lead to external links. Victims are often prompted to enter details such as their full name, phone number, and even banking information. This tactic is commonly associated with phishing, where scammers aim to steal personal data or gain unauthorized access to accounts, including messaging apps like Telegram.

Users should be aware that official Touch ’n Go Money Packets do not require any form submission or personal data entry. Once a valid QR code is scanned using the Touch ’n Go eWallet application, the money is directly credited to the recipient’s account.

There are several warning signs that can help users identify a fraudulent QR code. These include :

1- Links that open in a web browser instead of the eWallet app

2- Suspicious or unfamiliar domain names

3- Requests for personal information, and

4- Offers that appear unrelated, such as claims for government assistance.

To stay protected during the festive season, users are advised to only scan QR codes from trusted sources, verify links before interacting with them, and avoid sharing personal or financial information on unverified platforms. It is also recommended to rely solely on the official Touch ’n Go eWallet application when claiming any digital money packets.

While digital duit raya adds convenience and excitement to the celebration, vigilance remains essential. By staying informed and cautious, users can enjoy the festivities without compromising their personal security.

Let the spirit of giving be accompanied by awareness and responsible digital practices.
