A secondary school administrative assistant stood trial in the Sessions Court today, facing two charges of abusing her position to receive bribes totaling RM39,900. The accused, Hasniah A M Nawir, 50, pleaded not guilty to the charges read before Judge Jason Juga.

According to the allegations, Hasniah used her official position to secure a bribe for her husband, Saharuddin Kasim. She allegedly selected MRD Enterprise to carry out installation work involving sinks, plumbing, and other tasks at the school, amounting to RM19,980. Additionally, Hasniah is accused of using her position to benefit herself by engaging Mega Corporation to provide photocopier and printer rental services for the school through the ePerolehan system. The service, valued at RM19,920, was reportedly performed by herself.

The offences were allegedly committed at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Abaka in August and September 2020. Both charges fall under Section 23(1) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009. If convicted, Hasniah could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine of either five times the bribe amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, as stipulated under Section 24(1) of the same Act.

The judge granted Hasniah bail of RM15,000 with one surety and required her to surrender her travel documents. She was also instructed to report to the nearest MACC office every two months. The case is scheduled for re-mention on August 20.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Izzati Sapifee represented the prosecution. Hasniah, however, did not have legal representation during the proceedings. This high-profile case underscores the seriousness with which Malaysian authorities are tackling corruption within public institutions, highlighting the ongoing efforts to maintain integrity and transparency in the educational sector. The outcome of this case will likely serve as a precedent and a deterrent to similar offences in the future.
