Schoolgirl, 13, injured in assault by 5 girls in Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu: Police have confirmed receiving a report involving a schoolgirl who was assaulted by a group of teenage girls.

A video of the incident has been widely shared on social media since Wednesday.

Kota Kinabalu Acting Police Chief Supt Syed Lot Syed Abdul Rahman said the 13-year-old victim lodged a report herself at 7.51am on May 23.

“Initial investigations revealed that the incident occurred on May 22 around 8am in the Kota Kinabalu district. The victim is believed to have been assaulted by five schoolgirls with their bare hands.

“As a result of the incident, the victim sustained bruises on both shoulders and legs, a bruised left ear and minor scratches on her left knee,” he said in a statement, Thursday.

He said further investigations found that the victim and all suspects were students from different schools here and were believed to have known each other through a WhatsApp group called “Angel.”Syed Lot said the victim was believed to have been brought to the location by two suspects before being surrounded and assaulted by the group due to a misunderstanding and dissatisfaction.

“The victim also claimed that she was threatened not to inform her family members or the police about the incident,” he said.

He added that several other students and members of the public witnessed the incident before the video of the assault went viral on social media.

The case is being investigated under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and under Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
