Science stream students target needs action plan

Kota Kinabalu: An integrated action plan must be in place to achieve the target of at least 40 per cent of students in the State taking the science stream by 2025, says Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

He said the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (KSTI), Sabah Education Department and related agencies should come up with the action plan.

“This is because the level of student involvement in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), especially pure science, is declining and this is worrying. “We want to provide highly skilled human capital in technical fields, science and technology to meet the job requirements in the future.

“I hope KSTI, the Sabah Education Department and all related agencies can come up with an integrated action plan to achieve the target of at least 40 per cent of students taking the science stream by 2025,” he said.

He said the KSTI Strategic Plan (2022-2025) has been drafted as a guide for the implementation of various programmes and initiatives to empower the STIE (Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy) ecosystem in Sabah.

“As we all know, the young generation is the main layer of countries that need to be given attention, to ensure sufficient human capital and highly skilled workforce to drive state and national development. This is closely related to STEM education which is the most important basis for the production of highly skilled human capital,” he said.
