
A fossil discovered in northeastern Brazil is giving scientists and visitors a rare look at a world that existed hundreds of millions of years before the dinosaurs. The traces, preserved inside a huge rock found in Ceará, point to a time when part of the region was under the sea.
Presented by the Paleontology Laboratory of the State University of Vale do Acaraú (Labopaleo/UVA), the discovery brings new evidence about the geological history of inland Brazil and highlights a chapter of the region’s past that remained hidden in stone.
The fossil was found in Tianguá, inside Ubajara National Park, an area already known for its natural heritage. While the region today is marked by elevated terrain and dry landscapes, researchers say these newly identified traces tell a very different story.
Fossil Traces Preserved For Hundreds Of Millions Of Years
At the center of the discovery is a rock estimated to weigh around 700 kilograms, identified within the boundaries of Ubajara National Park. According toLabopaleo/UVA press release, the preserved marks found inside the rock are approximately 430 million years old, placing them in a geological period that existed long before dinosaurs appeared.

These remains were identified as ichnofossils, meaning fossils that preserve the activity of ancient organisms rather than their physical remains. They are therefore neither bones nor shells, but traces left behind by marine animals as they moved across or interacted with the seafloor.
After images of the fossil were published by the laboratory, the discovery quickly attracted attention among researchers and residents across the Ibiapaba region.
A Clue That The Region Was Once Underwater
The scientific significance of the find lies in what these traces suggest about the ancient geography of Ceará. As explained by the the research team involved in the study:
“The presence of these invertebrates supports the theory that the present-day Serra de Ibiapaba was once covered by ocean waters. This discovery helps reconstruct the environmental history of the region long before the formation of its current mountainous landscape.”

The fossil helps rebuild part of the environmental history of Ceará from a time before the landscape seen today had formed. The marks preserved in the rock captured signs of animal activity on the floor of what researchers describe as an ancient ocean.
Ancient Fossil Open to the Public
The rock has officially become part of the collection of the Dom José Museum, which is responsible for preserving historical heritage in the region. At the same time, according to details shared with the announcement, the fossil has been loaned indefinitely to Ubajara National Park so visitors and scientists can continue to access it.

Keeping the specimen in the park allows people to see the discovery in the area where it was found. The publication of the first images by Labopaleo/UVA on May 8, 2026, marked the end of an initial phase of laboratory work and showed how cooperation between universities, environmental institutions, and local communities.
