Scientists may have found a new way to treat insomnia symptoms

  • A new clinical trial suggests that ingesting capsules containing faecal microbes from healthy sleepers may help treat insomnia symptoms.
  • Researchers from Peking University in Beijing found that faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) with antibiotic pretreatment improved objective sleep continuity and sustained subjective insomnia outcomes.
  • The study involved 40 participants receiving FMT capsules after antibiotic pretreatment, compared to a control group of 40 receiving placebo capsules.
  • Participants receiving FMT showed improved sleep efficiency and reduced wake after sleep onset, with benefits sustained from two to six months.
  • This research indicates that targeting the gut microbiota could be a promising new therapeutic strategy for chronic insomnia disorder, highlighting the gut-brain axis's role in human sleep.
