Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has called on the Selangor government to cancel its proposal to centralise pig farming activities in Bukit Tagar, Hulu Selangor, urging state leaders to either abandon the project entirely or relocate it to a more suitable area. He said the matter was raised and discussed during a Cabinet meeting, where concerns surrounding environmental impact and the well-being of nearby residents were highlighted.

Speaking in Bangi on January 24, 2026, Anwar stressed that the objections voiced by local communities must be taken seriously, particularly when environmental sustainability and social harmony are at stake. He indicated that further discussions would be held with the Selangor Menteri Besar to reassess the viability of the proposed site, adding that relocation should be considered if cancellation proves possible.

The controversy surrounding the Bukit Tagar project intensified earlier in January after the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, expressed disagreement with the state government’s plan. While acknowledging the need for controlled and limited pig farming to meet the dietary requirements of non-Muslims in Selangor, the Sultan took the position that large-scale operations were unnecessary and could be perceived as insensitive in a state where Muslims form the majority of the population.

Despite these objections, Selangor agriculture committee chairman Izham Hashim has defended the proposal, stating that centralising pig farming would allow the industry to be managed in a cleaner and more systematic manner. He said approximately 202 hectares of land in Bukit Tagar, including a designated buffer zone, had been identified for the project. According to Izham, the plan involves a closed farming system designed to operate with zero emissions, minimising environmental risks and reducing disruption to surrounding communities.

At the federal level, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu previously indicated that Putrajaya had no objections to the plan, provided the site met environmental standards and the project was implemented under a comprehensive management strategy. He emphasised that any agricultural development must comply with environmental regulations and be supported by proper planning to ensure long-term sustainability.

Anwar’s intervention signals a more cautious federal stance, balancing economic considerations with environmental protection and public sentiment. His call for cancellation or relocation underscores the government’s emphasis on inclusive decision-making, particularly for projects with potential social and ecological consequences. As discussions between federal and state authorities continue, the future of the Bukit Tagar pig farming proposal remains uncertain, with public interest and royal views likely to weigh heavily on the final outcome.
