- A Cold War-era concrete bunker, part of Britain's nuclear defence network, has been unearthed during an archaeological dig at Scarborough Castle.
- The underground facility was constructed between 1963 and 1964 for Royal Observer Corps (ROC) volunteers to detect and plot nuclear bomb impacts.
- English Heritage experts have opened the bunker's entrance and are assessing its condition, as its exact location was unknown since it was sealed in 1968.
- The discovery forms part of a wider English Heritage project commemorating 100 years of the ROC, which also includes a search for past members.
- The excavation, which began on 7 March, was made possible through funding raised by National Lottery players.
