THE second victim of the drowning incident at Pantai Sura Tengah in Dungun was discovered in the early hours of Friday, concluding a harrowing rescue operation.

Mohd Fazir Shafie, 37, was found at approximately 12:35 a.m., around one kilometre from the location where he and his sister had been reported swept away by the sea.

Shahrizal Samsuddin, Senior Assistant Fire Officer and Head of the Dungun Fire and Rescue Station, said the body was located stranded along the shoreline by rescue personnel and was pronounced dead by a medical officer before being handed over to police for further investigation.

“Following the recovery of the victim, the search and rescue operation was officially concluded at around 1:10 a.m.,” he added.

The body of Mohd Fazir was subsequently transferred to the Forensic Unit of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah in Kuala Terengganu for post-mortem examination.

The tragic incident occurred around 10:27 a.m. on Thursday when Mohd Fazir reportedly attempted to save his sister, Nor Baizura Shafie, 38, who had been swept away while bathing at the beach. Both siblings were carried off by the current.

Rescue teams recovered Nor Baizura’s body at approximately 10:54 a.m. the same day. She was later laid to rest at Kampung Gong Pasir Islamic Cemetery at around 10:00 p.m.

The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks posed by strong coastal currents, even in familiar local waters, and has left the community in Dungun mourning the loss of two family members in a single, heartbreaking event. - January 2, 2026
