KUALA LUMPUR: A secondary school teacher in Kelantan, along with nine members of his family, lost RM95,000 after being duped by a company offering umrah pilgrimage packages four years ago.

Che Roni Mat, 56, said that the loss was compounded by the death of his sister-in-law who was part of the umrah group last year.

“My sister-in-law only works in the village, and the income from the sale of kuih was not much and she gave me the money for the umrah pilgrimage. It was just so sad her dreams of visiting Makkah and Madinah were unfulfilled when she died in March last year,” he said in a press conference after lodging a police report here today.

Che Roni is among the 123 individuals who lodged a police report regarding the umrah package scam with a total loss of RM1.3 million.

The father of five said he was very disappointed when he was repeatedly deceived by the well-known company in the capital which promised to reschedule the flight ticket and asked him to make additional payments.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf when contacted by Bernama today confirmed receiving the report and further investigation will be carried out.

Apart from that, Malaysian International Humanitarian Organisation secretary-general Datuk Hishamuddin Hashim said the case has been classified as Refer to Other Agency and submitted to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.–Bernama
