Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has rejected any “secret negotiations” between the Umno leadership and PAS on cooperation for the 15th general election (GE15).
He said negotiations held by individuals in their personal capacities cannot be considered as official discussions held on the party’s behalf.
“I don’t know whether there were negotiations or discussions, but we can’t stop anyone from meeting their friends from PAS,” said Ismail, an Umno vice-president.
“But negotiations are only legitimate when they are conducted by the party. The party must also decide who their representative is in such negotiations.
“If they are by themselves, they cannot be considered as representing the party.”
Ismail was speaking to reporters after officiating the Malaysia Halal International Showcase at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) here today.
He was asked to comment on a Sept 4 statement by PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan that talks were held with certain Umno leaders to persuade the party’s leadership to ensure straight fights with Pakatan Harapan in GE15.
However, Takiyuddin has refused to reveal who these Umno leaders were, stating only that they “have a position” and the ability to “influence decisions”.
PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin has also confirmed there had been secret discussions between the party and certain Umno leaders to ensure straight fights with PH in GE15.
He said PAS was trying to drive home the point that the opposition coalition was the real enemy, not Bersatu.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Muhyiddin Yassin said he would demand an explanation from PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Takiyuddin about PAS’ secret discussions with Umno leaders at a meeting tonight.
Ties between Umno and PAS have deteriorated after PAS joined Bersatu to form PN when Muhyiddin’s administration took over Putrajaya in March 2020.
