The security area at Hamburg Airport has been evacuated due to a "police incident."
All passengers were required to leave the area beyond the security checkpoints, said a police spokesman on Friday. Passengers who were already on board aircraft were also required to disembark.
The spokesman declined to elaborate on the nature of the incident. In such cases, suspicious objects are often the cause of additional security measures.
The security area is currently being investigated, the spokesman said. It is not yet clear how long the closure will last.
A dpa reporter at the airport in northern Germany reported that delays of three hours were being shown for all flights.
However, according to police, only the security area where passengers who had already been screened were located was affected by the closure. The other parts of the airport remained accessible, police said.
The German Armed Forces are currently conducting training at Hamburg Airport.
Six Tornado fighter jets have been stationed at the civilian airport, which is named after former chancellor Helmut Schmidt, since the start of the week.
The aircraft are practising daytime take-offs and landings alongside normal flight operations.
