THE death of a 54-year-old security guard assaulted outside a condominium in Jalan Ipoh has led police to reclassify the case as murder.

Sentul police chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari, confirmed that the investigation has been amended following the victim’s passing.

"The investigation paper has been reclassified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," New Struts Times cited him saying, adding that the suspect, a 32-year-old man believed to own a unit in the condominium, remains on police bail while awaiting instructions from the deputy public prosecutor.

"This is because the case was initially investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon. Once the victim passed away, the classification was reviewed," he explained.

Ahmad Sukarno said the initial investigation paper was completed and submitted to the DPP three days after the incident. "Police are now awaiting further instructions from the DPP on the next course of action," he added.

Authorities have also seized a lighter from the suspect that resembled a pistol. "It’s smaller in size compared to a real gun, but it looks similar," he said.

The incident, first reported last month, involved R. Chandran being assaulted at the guardhouse of Menara Megah condominium after refusing a resident’s request to accompany him to his unit. Chandran had lodged a police report claiming the assailant brandished a pistol. He sought medical treatment but was later found dead.

The case, which initially drew attention over the alleged firearms element, remains under close scrutiny by the authorities. - November 3, 2025
