Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh recently shared details of her visit to the bustling Syawal Bazaar at Kuala Lumpur’s Lorong Tuanku Abdul Rahman, highlighting not just the festive atmosphere but also her personal approach to understanding issues on the ground.

In a Facebook post this morning (20 March), Yeoh said she spent the evening from 6:30 PM to 9 PM last night (19 March) walking through the bazaar alongside Kuala Lumpur Mayor Dato Haji Fadlun Mak Ujud, engaging directly with traders and members of the public. She described the area as lively and full of energy, with shoppers busy hunting for Hari Raya outfits while vendors worked non-stop to meet the crowd’s demands.

Understanding the real challenges

Beyond the vibrant scenes, the Federal Territories Minister emphasised that such walkabouts are something she genuinely enjoys, as they allow her to better grasp the real challenges people face. For her, walking the ground is not just a routine visit; it is how she gains first-hand insight.

“I always enjoy walking the ground to gain an understanding of the challenges. Seeing is believing,” she stated.

Yeoh further revealed that the route taken during the visit was intentionally random to keep observations natural and unfiltered.

Approachability and community spirit

Previously, Malay villagers have noted a similar point, citing Yeoh as approachable and always keen to understand the issues and problems they are experiencing.

The Federal Territories Minister noted that this is what Kuala Lumpur looks like every Ramadan: alive with opportunity, community spirit, and people working hard to earn a living. Traders were occupied while visitors immersed themselves in their festive preparations, Yeoh noted in her post.

Collaboration with DBKL

She also expressed appreciation for the Kuala Lumpur Mayor’s enthusiasm during the walk, joking that he might even be fitter than she is, as they clocked plenty of steps throughout the evening.
