Sega’s recent Virtua Fighter New Project presentation and reveal of its new 3D fighting game during Tokyo Game Show 2025 was, arguably, a whole bowl of nothing.
Fighting game fans were disappointed that little gameplay was shown, with the presentation relying heavily on explanations and screenshots. Still, Sega shared some information about the upcoming Virtua Fighter sequel’s new rules and battle systems. They are:
Battle rules
Standard – Victory is determined by either depleting the opponent’s health or causing a ring out. By default, matches are won by taking three rounds.
Uprising – A completely new battle rule that introduces dynamic momentum-shifting opportunities, offering a gameplay concept distinct from standard rules.
New fighting mechanics
Break & Rush – This system introduces dynamic damage accumulation. As specific body regions take repeated hits, damage builds up, eventually allowing for a targeted break. Once a break attack lands, the attacker gains a strategic advantage, opening up new offensive options. The “broken” status carries over across rounds, adding a tactical layer of depth and tension to every match.
Stunner and Stun Combo – A new strike technique called the “Stunner” unlocks a fresh combo mechanic that emphasises fluidity and realism without requiring complex inputs.
Flow Guard – A new defensive mechanic that highlights fluid motion and visual flair. Working alongside the Break & Rush system, it introduces dynamic shifts between offence and defence across a variety of combat situations.
No release date or year has been announced for Virtua Fighter yet. Fingers crossed we get something at this year’s The Game Awards.
