The Selangor government is setting ambitious targets for tourism in conjunction with Visit Selangor Year 2025, aiming to attract seven billion local and international tourists to the state. Datuk Ng Suee Lim, Chairman of the State Local Government and Tourism Committee, revealed that this target is anchored in the tourism industry's significant contribution of 26.5% to Malaysia's largest gross domestic product (GDP) in 2022.
Highlighting Selangor's tourism growth, Ng stated that the state surpassed its target for tourist arrivals in 2023, welcoming 6.54 million visitors compared to the initial goal of five million. Looking ahead, the target for 2025 is 5.6 million tourist arrivals, with a focus on ecotourism promotion.
Ng emphasized the intensification of ecotourism efforts, identifying attractive destinations in the northern and southern parts of the state. The Sabak Bernama to Kuala Selangor districts in the north and Sepang and Kuala Langat districts in the south have been pinpointed for their potential to offer captivating packages for tourists.
To bolster domestic and international tourism, Ng's team, in collaboration with Tourism Selangor, is actively implementing promotional campaigns. The domestic segment is targeted through the "Nak Bercuti? Pusing Selangor Dulu!" promotion, while the international segment is addressed with the "Splendid Selangor, Take Me Anywhere!" campaign. Ng emphasized the strategic advantage of Selangor having flights arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 and 2, as well as at Subang Airport, all within the state.
To further enhance tourism awareness and accessibility, Ng revealed plans for a Selangor Fair. This initiative aims to showcase the state's unique features and offer enticing holiday packages. Ng drew a parallel with the well-known Matta Fair, emphasizing that the Selangor Fair will be the first of its kind with a dedicated focus on promoting the diverse attractions and offerings within Selangor.
As the state gears up for Visit Selangor Year 2025, the tourism initiatives and ambitious targets underscore Selangor's commitment to positioning itself as a premier destination for both domestic and international travellers. The emphasis on ecotourism and the planned promotional activities signal a concerted effort to leverage the state's natural beauty and cultural richness to attract a diverse range of tourists.
