Selangor intensifies support for MSMEs to enhance resilience and explore international markets, countering global supply chain disruptions.
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor state government is ramping up efforts to bolster micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
This initiative aims to ensure the state’s economy remains resilient amidst the ongoing global supply crisis.
State Executive Councillor for Investment, Trade and Mobility Ng Sze Han emphasised the need to support MSMEs in expanding beyond domestic borders. He highlighted their potential to tap into wider international opportunities.
“I see many Selangor-based companies with strong technological capabilities, having the potential to enter international markets, starting with Southeast Asia,” Ng said. To facilitate this, Invest Selangor will organise the Selangor International Business Summit in Bandung, Indonesia this July.
The summit specifically aims to help local companies penetrate the larger Indonesian market. Ng made these remarks in reply to a question on the resilience of Selangor-based companies and their trade contributions.
He also addressed the significant impact expected from the West Asia conflict on Selangor. The state’s role as a key national manufacturing and logistics hub makes it particularly vulnerable.
The logistics sector has been identified as one directly impacted by the global supply crisis. This has driven up logistics and insurance costs, consequently raising goods prices.
Disruptions to shipping operations can also affect production schedules and delivery commitments. In a worst-case scenario, industries may even face the risk of order cancellations from international clients.
Ng added that the state government will continue encouraging local companies to strengthen competitiveness. He noted that increasing domestic direct investment is a key priority.
Domestic direct investments currently account for more than 60% of Selangor’s total investment profile. This focus aims to build a more self-sustaining economic buffer against external shocks.
