A Selangor state executive councillor calls for maximum jail and caning for fatal drink-driving after a fatal crash in Klang claims a father’s life.

SHAH ALAM: A Selangor state executive councillor has called for maximum imprisonment and caning for fatal drink-driving offences.

The call follows a fatal crash in Klang yesterday where a motorcyclist was killed by a driver allegedly under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

State Human Resources and Poverty Eradication Committee chairman V. Papparaidu (pic) said existing measures appear insufficient as a deterrent.

“I urge that firm and commensurate legal action be taken against the perpetrator… this is no longer an isolated case,” he said in a Facebook post.

He stated it is time for a tougher approach through stricter enforcement and heavier punishment.

“The lives of the people should not be put at risk due to the irresponsible actions of a few,” Papparaidu added.

Klang Selatan district police chief ACP Lim Jit Huey said the incident occurred at about 11.40 am on Jalan Raya Barat.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was flung onto the roof of another car and pronounced dead at the scene.

The Klang Magistrate’s Court has ordered the suspect, a man in his 20s, to be remanded for four days.

He is being investigated under Section 44(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Papparaidu extended his condolences to the victim’s family, noting the deceased was a father of two.

“This incident once again proves that driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs is extremely dangerous,” he said.

He also called for prompt assistance to be extended to the victim’s family in the interest of justice.
