SHAH ALAM, May 7 - Selangor is targeting the gastronomy sector as one of its key industries over the next 10 years, with the aim of strengthening its role in the state’s creative economy.
Entrepreneurship executive councillor Najwan Halimi said the tourism sub-sector has strong potential to be further developed, positioning Selangor on par with Malaysia’s leading gastronomic hubs.
He said the state hopes to secure recognition as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, similar to Kuching which achieved the status in 2021, thereby generating significant economic value.
“The main focus is job creation, increasing the state’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP), as well as making Selangor a culinary destination capable of attracting tourists and investors,” he said.
At the same time, he said support for the gastronomy sector is being strengthened through various grants and initiatives to stimulate industry growth.
He said multiple market exposure efforts are currently being carried out through the Selangor Creative Economy Expo, digital promotion, the Selangor Rhythm Tour programme, and collaboration with state agencies.

Najwan added that initiatives such as creative grants, marketing training, entrepreneurship courses and exhibition opportunities are also available to food industry players.
“We will increase grants and assistance for this sector in the future by strengthening cooperation between agencies, industry players and communities through collaborative programmes and cultural festivals.
“(In addition), we will strengthen industry networks and joint promotion platforms, bringing industry players under one creative economy agenda so that grassroots input can reach the state’s strategic economic planning level,” he said.
He also stressed the importance of collaboration with the culture portfolio in elevating gastronomy as part of the state’s identity, while expanding its reach internationally.
