KUALA LUMPUR — The Selangor government has welcomed the Health Ministry’s agreement on a site for a new, 500-bed public hospital to serve Petaling Jaya residents.
Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the decision followed a coordination meeting held on May 14 involving federal agencies, the state government and local authorities.
“The state government has been actively working to identify a suitable site for a public hospital in Petaling Jaya since 2018, taking into account the rapid population growth in the Petaling district, which now stands at about 2.3 million people.
“In Petaling Jaya alone, the population is estimated to exceed 800,000,” he said in a statement today.
Amirudin’s statement did not mention the site, but Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad was reported telling Malaysiakini that it would involve a six hectare plot in Taman Medan, where the X Park PJ South sports complex is currently located.
Amirudin today said the proposed site was deemed suitable in terms of accessibility for residents, development capacity, land cost and its proximity to densely populated areas.
He added that the Petaling Jaya hospital would be designed as a vertical development, similar to Hospital Ampang, in order to optimise land use and development costs.
“A site visit by the Health Ministry will be carried out in the near future with the participation of state government agencies, including the State Economic Planning Unit, the Petaling Jaya City Council and the Petaling District Office.
“The Selangor government stands ready to facilitate and expedite all land-related matters to ensure the Petaling Jaya Hospital project can be realised for the benefit of residents in Petaling Jaya, Subang Jaya and Puchong,” he added.
At present, the existing public healthcare facilities for residents in the Petaling district include Hospital Sungai Buloh (1,037 beds), Hospital Shah Alam (490 beds), and University Malaya Medical Centre (946 beds) which is under the Higher Education Ministry.
Amirudin said the state government was also working closely with the Health Ministry to address congestion and accessibility issues at public hospitals in several other parts of Selangor.
He noted that Hospital Cyberjaya and Hospital Tanjong Karang were both completed in 2022 with capacities of 288 and 150 beds respectively, following cooperation between the Health Ministry and the state government on land-related matters.
Meanwhile, Hospital Kapar, which will house 312 beds, is expected to be completed by the end of this year and is anticipated to ease congestion at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah and Hospital Shah Alam. - May 27, 2026
