Amid rumors of Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz showing interest in joining the People’s Justice Party (PKR), Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari expressed his belief that this move would be more beneficial than Zafrul aligning himself with the opposition or Perikatan Nasional (PN).
Amirudin highlighted the need for broader discussions among Unity Government component parties to evaluate the implications of Zafrul’s potential membership in PKR. Speaking at the launch of the Ihsan Madani Squad Disaster Relief Mission: Kelantan Post-Flood Relief on Monday, Amirudin emphasized a measured approach.
“Yes, we are discussing carefully which is better—him moving to PN or joining the Unity Government. It must be viewed through a larger framework, not driven by the demands of certain groups,” he stated.
The issue of party-switching within the Unity Government has stirred debate. UMNO President Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi previously warned coalition partners against “stealing” members from allied parties, cautioning that such actions could sow discord. However, Prime Minister and PKR President Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that initial discussions about Zafrul’s potential entry into PKR had taken place, emphasizing the party’s openness to welcoming new members.
Amirudin clarified that these talks remain informal and have not reached PKR’s Political Bureau or Central Leadership Council for formal deliberation. He stressed that any decision must respect established protocols and the Unity Government's collaborative ethos.
“We cannot jump to conclusions. These are just rumors and informal discussions. An official application, if submitted, must follow the Unity Government’s agreed processes,” Amirudin explained.
When questioned about Zahid’s use of the term “stealing,” Amirudin acknowledged differing perspectives but called for focus on the broader interests of the Unity Government and the people.
“This is about maintaining a big framework. When it’s forgotten, chaos follows—just like what led to the government’s collapse within 18 months after the ‘Sheraton Move.’ We must prioritize the people’s collective interests,” he said.
Addressing speculation about his position as Selangor Menteri Besar, Amirudin dismissed recurring rumors about his removal, attributing them to baseless conjectures.
“Since 2020, I’ve heard claims that my time as Menteri Besar was over. Yet, Alhamdulillah, I continue to hold the trust and confidence of my party,” he said.
He also confirmed that his recent meeting with the Prime Minister centered on preparations for upcoming Sabah and Sarawak state elections.
