In a bid to maintain peace and stability, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor has called for calm from all parties involved in discussions surrounding the competencies of state legislative assemblies in enacting Islamic laws. The Sultan, who is also the chairman of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs (MKI), emphasized the importance of respecting the verdict of the Federal Court and upholding the supremacy of the Federal Constitution.
Addressing the Muslim community and stakeholders, Sultan Sharafuddin urged for decorum in expressing opinions to prevent confusion. He stressed the need for unity and advised against engaging in public arguments, advocating instead for amicable resolutions through consultation and private discussions.
The Sultan highlighted the politicization of religious issues over the years, leading to hostilities and misunderstandings among Muslims. He called for an end to quarrels over religious matters, emphasizing the significance of Muslim unity to garner respect from non-Muslim communities.
Expressing concern over the influence of partisan politics in religious administration, Sultan Sharafuddin urged politicians to refrain from exploiting religious issues for political gains. He emphasized the sensitivity of religious matters and cautioned against accusations and disputes that could exacerbate tensions.
The Sultan disclosed the establishment of a special committee, tasked with examining the issue at hand and providing recommendations to the MKI within a year. These recommendations will then be presented to the Conference of Rulers for further review and deliberation.
Acknowledging the weight of responsibility on the special committee, Sultan Sharafuddin expressed confidence in their ability to find a solution beneficial to all parties, particularly the Muslim community. He underscored the importance of seeking guidance from Allah in resolving complex issues.
The Sultan's remarks come in the wake of the Federal Court's ruling nullifying certain provisions of the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (1) 2019, citing overlap with federal laws. While acknowledging differing interpretations of the court's decision, Sultan Sharafuddin refrained from engaging in polemics, emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and consensus-building.
As discussions on Islamic laws continue, Sultan Sharafuddin's call for unity and calm serves as a reminder of the importance of fostering harmony and understanding within society. By promoting dialogue and cooperation, stakeholders can work towards resolving contentious issues in a manner that upholds the principles of justice and respect for all.
