Selangor students need better skills to stay relevant in AI era

SHAH ALAM, May 9 - The AI era demands that Selangor university students overseas improve their skills so they may remain relevant and competitive for the current job market, said Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporation), or MBI, chief executive officer Dato’ Saipolyazan M Yusop.

He added that the state needs highly skilled young talent in their respective fields of study to support Selangor’s future growth.

According to him, AI has become part of life and the working world, so students must gain an edge and improve their capabilities so they meet industry needs.

“Any organisation would accept their qualifications when they return to work in Malaysia, with the condition that they improve their skills and capabilities.

“In any field they study, students must (gain more skills) so they can compete with students from other places, making them part of a high-income workforce,” he said when met at the Selangor’s Future dialogue session in Australia yesterday.

The session, joined by 140 participants, was held in conjunction with the Overseas Selangor Students Convention at Parkroyal Darling Harbour in Sydney.

Meanwhile, Saipolyazan said, students need not worry about the speed of AI today, which is seen as changing the job landscape to the point that many are losing work.

“The concern that AI would replace employees actually doesn’t have to be an issue, as it is just a system that helps humans make more accurate decisions with analysis and such,” he added.

“(University students abroad from Selangor) can come back to Malaysia and work or start industrial training at MBI. They can even be involved in strategy fields at subsidiaries in technology and certain businesses because we need their skills,” Saipolyazan said.
