SULTAN of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah today said the government must take serious note of road accidents, especially those involving heavy vehicles on roads and highways.
His Majesty regrets having repeatedly voiced this concern, especially when it comes to punishment for drivers or companies who are found to be negligent and do not comply with the prescribed safety requirements.
"Looking at the increasing number of such cases and tragedies as well as the rate of road accidents, more immediate and firm action must be taken by the authorities.
"If found guilty and causing fatal accidents or serious injuries, the drivers and companies involved should not only be fined or imprisoned, but their driving licenses should also be revoked.
“This is to teach other drivers a lesson so that they are more careful and give undivided attention when driving," he said in a post on the Selangor Royal Office Facebook page.
The calls by Sultan of Selangor follow the tragic accident involving a lorry that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) policemen at Km15 of Jalan Sungai Manik–Sungai Lampam in Perak on Wednesday.
His Majesty urged companies that operate lorry, bus and other heavy vehicle services to ensure strict assessment in selecting drivers and attendants who are clean and problem-free.
Sultan Sharafuddin also reminded all parties involved not to turn a blind eye and take lightly matters that could lead to negligence such as the condition of the vehicle and the qualifications of the driver.
His Majesty hoped and prayed that there would be no more such tragic accidents, let alone those involving the loss of innocent lives, especially those serving for the security of the country.
Sultan Sharafuddin and Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin also expressed their condolences to the families and next of kin of the nine FRU members who were killed in the accident.
Their Royal Highnesses expressed their sadness and grief over the heartbreaking tragedy that befell all the victims involved. – May 15, 2025
