Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah scales down 25th-anniversary celebrations, redirecting funds to aid the needy as global economic challenges impact Malaysians
SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor has decreed that celebrations for his 25-year reign be held modestly.
Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah made the decision after consulting the state assembly, citing the uncertain global economic climate and its impact on the people.
“I am mindful of the global economic challenges and the hardships faced by the people,” said the Sultan.
He delivered his royal address at the opening of the Fourth Session of the 15th Selangor State Legislative Assembly.
The royal banquet at Istana Alam Shah in Klang will not be held. Fireworks displays and public concerts have also been cancelled.
Instead, the Ruler has consented to holding only two or three tea receptions at Padang Mahkota. These events will involve about 8,000 guests from the public and various service groups.
A special tea reception will also be held for CEOs of foreign companies that have invested in Selangor. The official ceremony will be limited to an investiture ceremony.
Sultan Sharafuddin stressed that all expenditures must be managed prudently with full transparency. He wants savings from the scaled-down celebrations channelled to assist those in need.
He also urged parties wishing to sponsor the events to donate to the Sultan Selangor Foundation instead. The public was advised to practise prudence amid current economic challenges.
The Sultan expressed deep concern over rising global oil and gas prices due to Middle East conflicts. He stated this has directly impacted Malaysia through higher fuel and essential goods prices.
“All forms of waste must be avoided, and every sen spent must benefit the people,” His Royal Highness said. He instructed the state government to prioritise spending on essential needs and the welfare of the rakyat.
