THE Ruler of Selangor His Majesty Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has delivered a stern reminder to Members of Parliament to conduct themselves with dignity, saying they must serve as “respectable examples” to the Malaysian public.
In an interview with Bernama, the Sultan expressed disappointment over recurrent scenes of shouting, quarrelling and disorderly behaviour in the Dewan Rakyat.
“This situation is embarrassing. Although various reminders have been given before, there are still those who continue to behave rudely,” His Royal Highness said.
Sultan Sharafuddin added that MPs ought to inspire younger Malaysians, yet instead “they behave like bullies”.
Last month, two MPs were ordered to leave the chamber after a heated verbal exchange, and several other disturbances have occurred this year amid rising tempers.
The Sultan emphasised that the Dewan Rakyat must stand as a model of mature democratic discourse.
“Members of Parliament should debate and argue knowledgeably and put forward constructive ideas. There is no need to be harsh or to hurl insults at one another.”
He called on MPs to preserve decorum, to debate with courtesy and to demonstrate maturity.
“I do not intend to interfere in the conduct of the Dewan Rakyat, as that is the responsibility of the Speaker, but certain behaviours in the chamber reflect poorly on our leadership and may set a bad example for young people.
“But as a Ruler, I must express my views and concerns,” he said, stressing that disagreements should be resolved through reason, sound arguments and considerate engagement.
