Selangor has recorded the highest number of sexual crimes in Malaysia over the past three years, with 90 percent of the perpetrators being locals. SAC Siti Kamisah Hasan, principal assistant director of Bukit Aman’s Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11), attributed Selangor’s high sexual crime rate to factors such as population density, economic activities, living pressures, and widespread internet access.
During a town hall meeting at the Selangor Contingent Police Headquarters, also attended by State police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan, Siti Kamisah explained that Selangor's status as a developed state, bordered by Negeri Sembilan, Kuala Lumpur, and Perak, facilitates the entry of residents from outside, thereby contributing to the state's crime rate. "Selangor, as a developed state with widespread internet access, has numerous facilities such as universities and prisons, and several sexual crimes are also reported here," she stated. Johor follows closely behind Selangor, facing similar contributing factors, particularly its high population.
However, Siti Kamisah did not provide detailed statistics or the exact number of sexual crime cases recorded in Selangor. She noted that investigations revealed that 90 percent of sexual crime perpetrators were known to their victims, including family members, friends, and individuals in positions of trust such as teachers. "Statistics show that the majority of sexual crime cases involve individuals in the B40 category, often due to economic pressures and unsuitable home environments," she added.
Addressing the high rate of sexual crimes, Datuk Hussein Omar Khan highlighted that a large number of cases might not accurately reflect the crime rate, considering the controlled crime situation and Selangor's population, which exceeds seven million. Nonetheless, he emphasized that the police are taking the issue seriously. To combat this problem, crime prevention activities, including patrols by the Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) and Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB), have been increased.
Additionally, the police are collaborating with local authorities to install CCTV cameras in key locations such as Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, and Klang. This initiative aims to enhance surveillance and deter potential criminals, thereby improving public safety in these areas.
The focus on Selangor's sexual crime rate underscores the need for ongoing vigilance and proactive measures. By addressing the root causes, such as economic pressures and unsuitable home environments, and by enhancing law enforcement efforts, the authorities hope to reduce the incidence of sexual crimes in the state. Public awareness and community involvement are also crucial in creating a safer environment for all residents.
As Selangor continues to develop and attract a diverse population, it faces unique challenges in maintaining public safety. The concerted efforts of the police, local authorities, and the community are essential to effectively combat and prevent sexual crimes, ensuring a secure and supportive environment for everyone.
