Selangor Umno's decision to hand back the 20 local council posts to Pakatan Harapan (PH) is generating mixed reactions.

While they deny it to be a sign of protest, their action to return the posts is seen as a strategic move to refute claims of being "greedy" and "demanding." The chairman of Selangor Umno, Megat Zulkarnain Omardin, emphasized that the party's intention is for PH to take care of the urban areas, while Umno oversees the villages. However, Umno still desires to have all 373 village development and security committee (JPKK) chairman posts.

Megat stated that they would inform the party president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, about this decision. The appointment of local councillors in Selangor has faced obstacles as Umno had initially declined the offer made by the menteri besar, Amirudin Shari. It was reported that the state government could not finalize the appointments due to Umno's reluctance. Previously, Selangor Umno had requested 24 local council posts, which was eventually reduced to 20.

The current development has caused discontent within Selangor PH, as many members feel that Umno is being overly demanding despite only winning two seats in the previous state election. An anonymous Selangor executive councillor expressed dissatisfaction, claiming that Umno has made prior demands regarding exco roles and village chief positions.

The recent "flare-up" revolves around Umno's alleged demand for 20 councillor posts across all local councils in Selangor. Megat asserts that the decision to return the local council posts was agreed upon during a meeting involving all 22 divisions in the state. However, he clarified that Selangor Umno has yet to select individuals to fill these positions.

Megat also defended the party's stance, stating that they were not demanding, but rather negotiating for the posts. He emphasized that the 20 local council posts only amount to 7% of the total of 288 available positions. The decision by Selangor Umno to hand back the local council posts carries strategic implications. By doing so, the party aims to dispel any negative perceptions of greed or excessive demands.

Additionally, the division of responsibilities between Umno and PH in overseeing urban areas and villages respectively indicates a willingness to cooperate in governance. However, the tensions arising from this situation highlight the challenges faced in maintaining a delicate balance within a coalition government. It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the dynamics between Selangor Umno and PH moving forward.
