SEMPORNA: Police confirmed that the rumoured kidnapping incident involving two secondary school students was just a misunderstanding.
District Police Chief Supt Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah in a statement said police noticed a statement in social media claiming that a kidnapping incident occurred on Tuesday (July 16).
Mohd Farhan said the statement shared in the social media also showed the vehicle and driver, allegedly involved in the incident.
“Investigation was immediately carried out and found that the incident was a misunderstanding following jokes between those involved (students and driver),” he said.

Read more According to Mohd Farhan, the misunderstanding arose when the two students hopped on a Perodua Myvi from school to return home, respectively.
He said after one of the students alighted from the vehicle, he jokingly told his friend to be careful while the driver also made a joke that he would kidnap the student.
The driver then continued the journey.
“Maybe due to fear and panic, the student opened the vehicle’s door and jumped out. The vehicle driver stopped and moved to assist the student.
“During the incident, members of public who were on scene assisted the student into his vehicle and brought him to the hospital,” said Mohd Farhan.
The student suffered received outpatient treatment for injuries on his arm and feet.
Mohd Farhan said the Perodua Myvi driver went to the police station to lodge a report.
Both parties were also called to give statements, he said, adding the incident was caused by misunderstanding and jokes.
Mohd Farhan urged members of public to not make any statement that could cause panic and fear among the people.
He added that any statement should be referred to legitimate and authentic sources to avoid confusion.
