Kota Kinabalu: Construction of the new Semporna landfill is currently at the contractor appointment stage, the State Legislative Assembly was told on Tuesday.
Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan said the project would proceed once a contractor had been appointed to carry out the construction works.
Replying to Bugaya assemblyman Jamil Hamzah during question time, he said cleaning operations on land and at sea in Semporna’s tourism areas were being carried out continuously, particularly in coastal waters and along the shoreline.
Fairuz said the Government had also collaborated with non-governmental organisations and village residents in Semporna to promote proper waste disposal and shared responsibility in maintaining cleanliness.
He added that there was also a proposal to provide incentives for every basket of rubbish collected.
