VOLUNTARY pay cuts among government officials may help augment funding for fuel subsidies and cash assistance amid the oil crisis, a senator said Wednesday.
Sen. Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito said proposals to trim salaries and allowances could support aid for vulnerable sectors while setting an example in government austerity.
“That's a noble offer; if salaries and allowances are trimmed, it would be a big help... salaries could even be donated to vulnerable sectors,” Ejercito said during the Kapihan sa Senado forum.
He said such measures could be done voluntarily, particularly if the Senate leadership adopts austerity steps.
“It can be voluntary... but if leadership leads... allowances can be slashed... it would be significant since government should set the example,” he added.
Earlier, Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre expressed support for the proposal, noting that lawmakers have previously reduced compensation during crises.
“I don't think that's going to be a problem, during crises... we do reduce our compensation,” Acidre said in a television interview.
He said the move could help fund fuel subsidies and cash aid as tensions in the Middle East continue to drive oil price pressures.
