Ti Lian Ker, a senator, has raised concerns over the apparent double standard in the handling of sedition cases, contrasting the lack of action against Umno Youth chief Dr. Akmal Saleh with the probe into DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

Dr. Akmal Saleh stirred controversy when he posted a photo of himself wielding a sword on Facebook during a trip to Japan on March 14. The caption accompanying the picture read, “No matter what, we will not waver from our stance. Better to die standing than live kneeling.” Ti Lian Ker questioned why Akmal had not been investigated or warned for potential sedition, especially considering that one of the offenses under the Sedition Act includes uttering words that could incite racial hatred.

In contrast, Lim Kit Siang was subjected to a probe by Bukit Aman in December the previous year for comments made on his blog regarding whether a non-Malay can become the prime minister. The investigation was initiated based on Lim's discussion of constitutional issues. Despite denying any intention to provoke, Lim found himself under scrutiny.

Ti Lian Ker highlighted this discrepancy, emphasizing the need for consistency in applying the law. He underscored his concerns about the incitement of racial tensions through social media, particularly when involving prominent figures associated with political parties like PKR and Bersatu. Ti Lian Ker shared a video of his speech in the Dewan Negara, where he called for police intervention to investigate or warn individuals who engage in behavior that could incite division within society.

Expressing his belief that failure to enforce the Sedition Act could lead to societal divisions, Ti Lian Ker urged authorities to take decisive action to prevent such incidents from setting dangerous precedents. By addressing these issues head-on, he hopes to maintain social cohesion and uphold the rule of law in Malaysia.
