Senior judge Sir John O’Hara has been appointed to lead an independent review of the Parades Commission.
It comes following a critical High Court judgment against the body in August.
The commission, which adjudicates on contentious parades in Northern Ireland, was heavily criticised by unionist politicians and the Orange Order after the ruling which quashed its determination over the Drumcree parade in Portadown.
High Court judge Mr Justice McAlinden referred to “errors”, “short cuts”, and “sloppy procedures” in the approach of the commission to making its determination.
The commission has blocked the order from marching along the mainly nationalist Garvaghy Road in Portadown in July every year since 1998.
Some unionist politicians called for the resignation of the commissioners, including chairwoman Professor Evelyn Collins, following the ruling.
One commissioner, Billy Gamble, who had attracted criticism, resigned from his post.
Secretary of State Sir Chris Bryant earlier this month announced an independent review to provide assurance on and consider improvements to the commission’s processes and procedures.
On Wednesday Sir Chris said he had appointed Sir John to lead the independent review into the decision-making processes and organisational governance of the commission.
“The Parades Commission carries out a vital role in sensitive and often challenging circumstances,” he said.
“Following the recent court judgment, it is paramount that we restore and maintain the highest possible levels of confidence in how decisions are reached.
“I have been steadfast in my commitment that this review must be entirely independent, thoroughly credible, and led by a figure of high standing and proven expertise.”
He added: “I am delighted that Sir John O’Hara KC has agreed to undertake this important work.
“His considerable standing, vast legal experience, and independence make him uniquely qualified to provide the assurance, scrutiny, and actionable recommendations needed.
“His appointment underscores the Government’s commitment to an objective, authoritative, and rigorous examination of the Commission’s governance and decision-making procedures.”
