SUBANG JAYA, April 3 — Seri Serdang state assemblyman Abbas Azmi has recommended the state government implement fire simulation exercises to help residents prepare for emergency situations.
He said that such an initiative is necessary as fires can occur at any time, as seen in the recent Putra Heights gas pipeline incident.
“We often conduct flood simulations, especially in high-risk areas. However, we have never carried out fire drills.
“There is a need for us to conduct these exercises, and I am confident that the Menteri Besar is also aware of this matter,” he told Media Selangor.
Speaking at the temporary relief centre in Masjid Putra Heights’ Multipurpose Hall, Abbas said that nearly 80 per cent of the victims are residents within his constituency.
“Today, the authorities, including the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and the police, along with residents, have entered the affected residential area. Any house deemed safe will be cleared for the owner to return, and further assistance will be provided thereafter,” he said.
Previously, the Selangor JBPM confirmed that the fire was caused by a gas pipeline leak in Putra Heights, with an estimated 500 metres of the pipeline catching fire.
Reports indicate that the flames from the burning gas pipeline soared over 30 metres into the air, generating extreme heat with temperatures reaching up to 1,000°C.
As a result of the incident, 78 homes were completely destroyed, along with 327 vehicles, affecting a 28-hectare area covering two localities — Taman Putra Harmoni and Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru.
