Kota Kinabalu: Young leaders of the Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) have been urged to serve all Sabahans irrespective of their political affiliations.

Gagasan Rakyat Deputy President Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said many candidates tend to count their chickens with sole support from party members, which is unsustainable in the long run.

“People want high quality candidates and not just the party. It’s the current trend. This was proven in the last state elections, including in my constituency.

“You’d be surprised that the number of votes I got (from others) were triple compared to from my own party members.

“That is why I emphasise on serving everyone. Because at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what party they are from, everyone has only one vote.

“To serve, you don’t ask their party membership. That is just serving your party which does not make you a leader in the real sense.

“We need to be leaders for all Sabahans. Yes, they may not have voted for you in the past but if we prove that we are leaders of better quality, they will definitely vote for us in the future,” Masidi said after launching the 2023 PGRS Women’s and Youth annual Meeting at Sabah International Convention Centre, here, Monday.

Over 3,300 party members from 76 divisions, including friendly observers, attended.

Masidi said PGRS wants to create a political culture of leaders with accountability, providing pure service to the community, not just as a leverage for job positions or personal wealth.

“If accountability can be instilled in each and every politician in Sabah, then development and future of people would be guaranteed.

“I am especially impressed by the PGRS Women’s and Youth wings. They are not only showing great potential, but also are educated and from multiracial backgrounds.

“This is exactly what we want in the party, to show that we are representative of all backgrounds that put weight in quality, our basis in creating future leaders,” he said.
