Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) has been urged to prepare an alternative action plan to overcome the inability to supply continuous electricity to the people.
Sabah West Coast Smart Consumers Association President David Chan said SESB can no longer rely on existing capacities as the need for electricity is increasing day by day.
David said the association regrets that SESB does not seem to have concrete plan to deal with the challenges, especially with the extraordinarily hot weather that has forced SESB to ration electricity supply. “We understand the problems that SESB has to face when electricity consumption increases as heat waves rise in the region.

On Tuesday, SESB announced that it would be implementing power rationing in several districts to stabilise Sabah’s electricity grid system due to high demand during the current hot weather. As such, David said SESB must implement renewable energy in the face of today’s extreme weather changes.
“I think this effort must be accelerated by building more solar farms ourselves, there is no point in inviting outside investors if the cost is higher for SESB to bear. “For long-term investment, solar energy and energy storage stations give more returns, it’s as though we can solve two problems at once,” he added.
He gave an example of the efforts made by the Sarawak government which has implemented BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) to increase the capacity of electricity supply especially during peak usage times.
He said the people are of course fully dependent on SESB to get a comprehensive and stable supply of electricity.
“After decades, the time has come for us to provide stable electricity supply services to the people.
“We hope that no party is marginalised and faced with difficulties and discomfort during the current hot season and heat wave,” he said.
