SEMPORNA: Seven people were injured, including a driver who was seriously hurt after being trapped, in a three-vehicle crash at Simpang Empat Kalumpang, Jalan Semporna-Tawau, Saturday morning.
The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received an emergency call at 9.52am and a team from the Semporna Fire and Rescue Station arrived at the scene at 10.30am.
The crash was believed to have occurred after a lorry carrying palm fruits dropped part of its load onto the road, causing the drivers of an Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux and Toyota Avanza to swerve to avoid the scattered fruits before crashing while travelling towards Tawau.
JBPM said the seven victims comprised three men and four women, with the Isuzu D-Max driver seriously injured after being trapped, while a 24-year-old man in the Toyota Hilux and another man in the Toyota Avanza sustained minor injuries, and the lorry driver was unhurt.
Three of the four women sustained minor injuries while another suffered a heart problem, with the trapped driver receiving initial treatment from the Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) team before being taken to Semporna Hospital, while the woman was also taken to the hospital by a Tawau Health Ministry ambulance, and the operation ended at 12.36pm after the road was cleared of oil, palm fruits and broken glass.
