SEVEN secondary school students have been detained by police in connection with the assault of a female student after footage of the incident spread widely across social media platforms.
The arrests were made at approximately 3pm on Friday and involved six female students and one male student aged between 15 and 17 years old.
Police said the male student is believed to have recorded the entire assault, which later circulated online and triggered widespread public outrage.
Syed Lot Syed Abdul Rahman said all seven teenagers were being held to assist investigations into the incident.
“The male student detained is believed to have acted as the individual who recorded the entire incident,” he said when contacted on Friday.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are currently being conducted under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting and Section 506 for criminal intimidation.
The case came to public attention after the victim lodged a police report one day following the alleged assault, which reportedly took place at around 8am on May 22.
Initial investigations found that the victim was allegedly attacked by five female students, resulting in bruising to both shoulders and legs, injuries to her left ear and minor wounds to her left knee.
Police believe the students involved were acquainted with one another and had communicated through a WhatsApp group known as “Angel” prior to the incident.
The viral circulation of the assault footage has reignited concerns over school violence, cyberbullying and the role of social media in amplifying youth-related criminal behaviour.
Authorities have not disclosed the motive behind the assault, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident remain ongoing. - May 29, 2026
