
Kota Kinabalu: A 49-year-old part-time runner from Melaka was jailed a total of 16 years and ordered to get five strokes of the cane for two counts of committing sexual assaults against his niece.
Sessions Court Judge Elsie Primus handed the sentence to the man after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt against him, Friday.
On the first count, the man was jailed seven years plus two strokes of the cane.
On the second count, he received another nine years’ jail and three strokes of the rattan.

He had committed the offences at two different houses in Manggatal in the end of 2019 and around 2020, respectively.
The man was found guilty of the offence under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 provides for a jail term of up to 20 years, and whipping, on conviction.
Apart from the said sentences, the court also ordered the man to undergo rehabilitation while serving his jail sentences and will be placed under police supervision for three years after completing his jail terms.
On Feb 3, this year, the man was ordered to enter his defence after the court ruled that the prosecution had established a prima facie case against him.
The prosecution had called seven witnesses to give evidence against the man and the defence had called four witnesses.
Counsel Sylyester Kuan defended the man.
