Benjamin Huggel has told former FC Basel teammate Granit Xhaka to apologise to Arsenal fans.

Gunners boss Unai Emery has resisted calls to strip Xhaka of the club captaincy after he clashed with fans during Sunday's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace.

Huggel told BILD: "Being whistled by your own fans is totally bad. Something breaks and something dies within you.

"Humanely the worst is that you can not let it show. Granit's provocation was not good. Just shaking your head, that would have done. And would have aired sadness instead of aggression.

"I would advise him to apologise. If he does that, then maybe he can be embraced again. But he has to convince on the pitch afterwards."
