Aston Villa boss Dean Smith says Bjorn Engels was taken off as a precautionary measure during their win at Norwich City.

He took the decision to withdraw Engels from the action with 15 minutes of the 5-1 victory left to play.

Ezri Konsa was handed his Premier League debut with a brief cameo as he replaced the Engels for the closing stages.

The Belgian international appeared to have hurt his knee in an innocuous challenge with Canaries striker Teemu Pukki.

"Yeah, he's okay," Smith confirmed. "He wanted to carry on but I made the call very quickly.

"We were defending a corner it was 4-0 and I wanted to keep it that way.

"Ezri got his first minutes in the Premier League as well."
