Shamsul Iskandar Akin, who stepped down as the prime minister’s political secretary few days earlier, moved swiftly to counter the accusations surrounding him by filing a police report in Sandakan against businessman Albert Tei—the key figure in the alleged Sabah mining scandal. His action marked a direct response to claims that had tied him, and indirectly the prime minister, to corruption.

In a statement posted online, Shamsul characterised the allegations as part of a malicious and coordinated conspiracy aimed at damaging Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s reputation. He suggested that the claims were not merely attempts to discredit him personally, but part of a broader effort to destabilise the current administration through undemocratic means. Shamsul added that he would not permit anyone to use his name as a tool to undermine the government or tarnish the prime minister’s standing.

The police report came on the same day the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) confirmed it would investigate Tei’s assertions. The businessman had alleged that he provided Shamsul with RM629,000 in benefits, which reportedly included property renovations, premium cigars, tailored suits, and other expenses. He claimed these contributions were made on the understanding that the funds were part of political dealings in Sabah and could eventually be recovered.

Tei also circulated screenshots of WhatsApp exchanges in which Shamsul allegedly asked for foreign currency ahead of travel abroad. The timing of these revelations—released shortly after Shamsul’s resignation—added intensity to the unfolding saga, raising questions about motive, authenticity, and the political stakes involved.

Shamsul had announced his departure from the prime minister’s office earlier, explaining that ongoing attempts to link him to controversies could harm the government’s image if left unaddressed. He said stepping aside was necessary to prevent his position from becoming a liability to the administration.

MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed that both Tei and Shamsul will be summoned for statements as part of the investigation. The agency is expected to review the documents the businessman claims to possess, including receipts and communications meant to support his allegations.

The situation has rapidly escalated into one of the most watched political developments of the week, with questions now centred on what the investigations will reveal and whether the accusations stem from genuine misconduct or a political manoeuvre designed to destabilise the government.
