Senior Political Secretary Urges End to Politicizing Najib’s House Arrest Issue
Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, has called for an end to the politicization of the additional document related to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's alleged house arrest. He voiced concern over irresponsible parties exploiting the matter to level unfounded accusations against the government, particularly targeting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Shamsul emphasized that the issue should be handled by the judiciary, urging all parties to allow the High Court to assess the views presented by both the government and Najib before making any decisions. This case is still in its early stages, and the judicial process should be respected. Unfortunately, the conversation has deviated from the actual matter at hand whether the additional document exists and has escalated into unwarranted demands for the Prime Minister to resign, face suspension, or even the death penalty, he said.
He stressed that such discussions lack propriety and undermine the decorum expected in public discourse. Speaking to reporters after appearing on an exclusive Bernama Radio programme, Shamsul clarified that his remarks were intended to realign the focus of the discussion, which has spiraled into baseless allegations.
High Court’s Role in Determining Justice
Shamsul Iskandar also addressed the Court of Appeal’s recent 2-1 majority decision to remit the case involving Najib’s claims about the additional document back to the High Court. He expressed confidence that the decision was made independently and without interference from the government led by Anwar.
“Anwar Ibrahim has consistently upheld an open and transparent stance regarding Najib’s trial. He has reiterated that as long as the process adheres to the Constitution and the law, legal avenues must be fully utilized to seek justice,” Shamsul stated.
The Court of Appeal's ruling, delivered on Monday, marked a significant turn in the legal battle. Justices Datuk Azhahari Kamal Ramli and Datuk Seri Mohd Firuz Jaffril, in a majority decision, overturned the High Court’s earlier dismissal of Najib’s application concerning the additional document. However, Justice Datuk Azizah Nawawi, who led the three-member panel, dissented, stating that Najib’s appeal lacked merit.
Calls for Responsible Engagement
Shamsul’s remarks come amid growing political tensions and public discourse surrounding Najib’s legal battles. He urged the public and political figures to exercise restraint and refrain from making inflammatory statements that could jeopardize the judicial process or harm the nation’s democratic integrity.
This is a sensitive and complex matter. It is crucial that we allow the judiciary to do its work without unnecessary distractions or undue pressure, he said.
Shamsul concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that the legal process remains impartial and free from external interference. He called on all parties to respect the court's role in adjudicating the issue and to avoid politicizing matters that should be decided through proper legal channels.
