Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has formally accepted the resignation of his senior political secretary, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, marking a significant development in the ongoing controversy surrounding a letter of support linked to a hospital project.
In an official statement, Anwar conveyed appreciation for Shamsul’s contributions while underscoring that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) now has full latitude to proceed with its investigation without any form of external pressure. The assurance was presented as part of the unity government’s continued emphasis on transparent governance and uncompromising integrity in public administration.
Shamsul, after announcing his decision to resign, shared that he had become aware of attempts to use the hospital-letter issue as a political tool aimed at discrediting the Madani administration. According to his explanation, he chose to relinquish his position to shield himself and the government from escalating attacks, noting that the environment surrounding the matter had shifted from an administrative question to a targeted effort to undermine public confidence in the leadership. He also conveyed gratitude for the trust Anwar had placed in him throughout his service.
The resignation came on the heels of mounting criticism over a letter of support issued for contractors involved in a hospital development project—an action that triggered public scrutiny and renewed calls for firmer measures against potential misconduct in government-linked dealings. The situation intensified when former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli publicly urged stronger corrective action, suggesting that decisive moves were necessary to demonstrate the government’s seriousness in upholding its anti-corruption agenda.
The unfolding issue has drawn attention not only because of Shamsul’s senior role within the Prime Minister’s Office but also due to the broader message it sends about the administration’s internal checks and commitment to clean governance. With MACC now expected to move swiftly, the spotlight shifts to the outcome of the probe and what it may reveal about procedural boundaries and conduct involving political offices.
As the investigation advances, the government has reiterated its stance that institutions responsible for oversight must be allowed to act independently. Shamsul’s departure, framed as a proactive step to prevent continued political exploitation of the controversy, has opened the way for enforcement bodies to carry out their duties without obstacles, reinforcing the unity government’s pledge to maintain accountability at all levels.
