Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s premier five-star beach resort Shangri-La Tanjung Aru will mark her 40th anniversary with three high-profile events, ending with a banquet expected to be attended by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor.

The resort will begin celebrations with a beach clean-up, collaborating with environmental non-government organisation (NGO), Reef Check Malaysia, to clean the Tanjung Aru beach on Sept 9.

Reef Check Malaysia is a 16-year-old NGO that is actively involved in reef management and conservation efforts. It is part of the world-wide Reef Check network.

On Sept 17, the resort will join hands with Kota Kinabalu-based business Jetsin Sdn Bhd and local non-government organization, Komuniti Prihatin Sabah, for the “Plastic for Food” campaign where residents of the nearby Gaya Island will exchange their plastic waste for food.

“One week later, on Sept 24, the resort will hold ‘Cycle for Charity Ride’ to raise money to buy sports equipment for the 400 pupils in both their adopted schools - Kitobu Inanam Primary School and Kaiduan Papar Primary School.

“The month-long celebration will end with an exclusive banquet to honour the resort’s long-serving employees and business partners on Oct 9.

“The Chief Minister has confirmed his attendance as the Guest of Honour to show his support for Sabah’s hospitality leader,” the resort said.

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru was built to host stay for Malaysian sultans, the Agong and the Malaysian Prime Minister who were in Kota Kinabalu for the Annual Malaysian Rulers’ Conference in 1983.

The resort opened its doors on Oct 9 to great fanfare where the entire town joined celebrations to welcome the royals.

The Yayasan Sabah Group, through Innoprise Corporation Sdn Bhd, holds 60 per cent equity of Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu, while the Shangri-La Group manages the 498-room resort and holds the remaining 40 per cent.
