It is heartening to learn that the newly appointed Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong is determined to lift the dignity of workers in Malaysia, irrespective of race and religion. Sim, previously was Deputy Finance Minister said, “The fate of employers & workers is interlinked that if workers are not protected then it will affect the company in terms of productivity. In an era of restructuring the economy under Malaysia Madani framework, the focus of HR is on the development of skills, worker welfare and productivity.”
Minister Sim officially unveiled the National HR agenda for 2024 that his Ministry would formulate the country's inaugural of National Human Resources Policy as the primary guide in efforts to strengthen the welfare, enhance skills and improve the success of workers. It aimed to prepare a labour market capable of facing the challenges as digital technology advancement for decent work.
I can recall in 2014, my HR professional team including MTUC President, Senator Syed Shahir in collaboration with Human Resource Development Corporation (HR Corp) developed the National Human Resource Standards (NHRS) Blueprint which was a result of nine months of research on HR systems and practices in Malaysia and globally. It was the outcome of findings and consultation that we had with the industry captains, leaders of employer associations (MEF, FMM, Sarawak & Sabah Governments), HR practitioners, union leaders, management consultants, academes, all level of employees and graduate students.

After 10 years, this NHRS Blueprint is still relevant as the fundamental source for Minister Sim & his HR Ministry team to craft the National Human Resources Policy for Malaysia.
I discovered the provocation that the best way to predict the future is to help to shape it has been attributed to various people. In these uncertain and fast-changing times, this idea gives a sense of hope and of purpose, individually and collectively: from HR central role to recruitment and retention, the cost of living crisis and adapting to new ways of working.
HR professionals are on the front line and have a huge opportunity to drive change for the better of their organisations. I see a sense of hope and optimism on the role of HR Ministry under its new leadership for ensuring the future well-being and decent living of our workforce in this country.
