Kota Kinabalu: The Borneo’s Plight in Malaysia Foundation (BoPiMaFo) and Sabah Sarawak Right Australia New Zealand (SSRANZ) demand that the Sabah Government explicitly reject Sabah Mufti Datuk Bungsu @ Aziz Jaafar’s endorsement of public caning for Shariah offenders, and his claim that such punishments were previously implemented in Tawau.

Its leaders Daniel John Jambun and Robert Pei expressed deep concern over the state government’s silence on the matter, questioning whether this inaction constitutes tacit approval of the Mufti’s statements.

AdvertisementThe said the Mufti’s assertions are not only misleading but also directly contradict Sabah’s secular constitutional framework and its guaranteed autonomy regarding religious matters under MA63.

Daniel and Robert said Sabah is not, and never was intended to be, an Islamic state, and that the application of Sharia law in this manner violates both human rights and the special rights granted to Sabah under MA63.
