Sharp rise in fuel thefts after Iran war caused prices to surge

  • Britain has seen a near-30 per cent surge in fuel thefts at petrol stations, which could cost the forecourt sector over £100m a year.
  • This rise is linked to increased fuel prices, with diesel up by 48.6 pence per litre and petrol by 25.1 pence per litre since the conflict in Iran began.
  • Forecourt Eye reported a 22 per cent rise in 'no means of payment' incidents and a 6 per cent rise in drivers leaving without paying across 500 forecourts.
  • The British Oil Security Syndicate (BOSS) confirmed a 19 per cent increase in unpaid fuel during March, with theft levels now surpassing 2022 highs.
  • BOSS urged petrol station operators to be extra vigilant during peak hours, especially for customers making small purchases without paying for their fuel.
